World number one Simona Halep has booked her place in Saturday’s 2017 Australian Open final after a thrilling victory over 2016 champions Angelique Kerber today.

Simona was forced to save two match points on her way to a 6-3 4-6 9-6 victory over the German.

She will meet world number two, Caroline Wozniacki, in the final after the Dane came through as a straight-set winner over Elise Mertens.  It is the first time in the open era that the top two players in the world will meet at a Grand Slam.  Both players are looking for their first major.

The Romanian had led by a set and a break before failing to convert two match points at 5-4 in the deciding set.  Two games later and she faced 15-40 and two match points on Angelique Kerber’s serve.

Simona kept her cool and turned things in her favour, eventually breaking the German’s serve in the 16th game of the third set to reach her third Grand Slam final.

The only concerns from this match will be that she blew ahead into a 5-0 lead in only 13 minutes and later led 4-1 in the second before tightening up and only coming through narrowly in an epic deciding set.
