World number one Simona Halep is safely through to the third round of this year’s French Open with a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over Taylor Townsend on Thursday.

The Romanian showed no signs of fatigue after playing matches in back-to-back days after her first round victory over Alison Riske on Wednesday was delayed a day due to bad weather in Paris.

Halep had taken three sets to see off Riske after an error prone opening set but continued where she left off on Thursday by dropping only four games.

Last year’s runner-up ran out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set before failing to serve it out and eventually taking it 6-3.

Taylor Townsend was no match in the second set as Halep never looked back from an early break and a 3-1 lead, winning the final three games after that.

Simona Halep is still in search of her first Grand Slam win and will be buoyed by her performance on Thursday that saw her pull Townsend around the court in a dominant display.

A tougher test is set for the Romanian in round three as she is set to take on Germany’s Andrea Petkovic who was a 6-0 7-6 winner over Bethanie Mattek-Sands today.
