World number one Simona Halep defeated teenage wildcard Destanee Aiava to book her place in the second round of this year’s Australian Open.
Simona had to come from 2-5 and save two set points in the opening set before winning the tie break 7-5 before running out a comfortable 6-1 winner in the second to set up a second round match against 2014 Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard.
17-year-old Desanee Aiava actually led 5-2 in the first set when she had to leave the court briefly with an injury. Unfortunately, Simona herself had her ankle strapped in the second set.
Simona was on court for 1 hour, 51 minutes today with a potential ankle injury being the biggest concern for her progress in Melbourne. Both players served 2 aces whilst Aiava served up 9 double faults to Simona’s 1.
Second round opponent Eugenie Bouchard was a 6-3 7-5 (7-5) winner over France’s Oceane Dodin over on court 2. The Canadian will be in doubles action tomorrow with partner 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens.
